Design is a thought activity: we should not replace it with a mere “optimizing” approach, because it’s from imperfections that talent emerges.
To start from firsthand experiences, to be able to create tension and expectation, to make people change perspective on things, to lead to an original vision of the world: these are the stages of an effective storytelling according to Oliver Stone, the Oscar-winning director who spoke at the last IAB Forum in Milan last December 2. Following his first golden rule, the filmmaker started with a personal anecdote: «My experience as a storyteller started when I was a kid. My father was an excellent storyteller, every week he would make me write an essay on a different subject ».
Within the thematic frame of the event, focused on digital, Oliver Stone held a lectio full of insights, ranging from cinema to new technologies. «Special effects – he said – are important in a movie. Although it’s boring when they’re used too much. I prefer to stage personal experiences. I told about America, for instance, because America is my life».
Stone definitely has a positive opinion on digital technologies applied to daily life: «The web – he points out – is an extraordinary tool because it allows a direct comparison with reality. Social media are society’s third voice: beyond the truths told by politicians and traditional media, there are Facebook and Twitter’s truths. And these truths, these versions of reality, arise from common sense, from the experience of each one of us and they are essential for the freedom of thought».
