Individual identity in contemporary society is more and more a foggy labyrinth, which we all are trying to get out of. Comunicazionepuntodoc 8th issue explores how the sense of individuality has changed through modern times.
The magazine by the PhD programme in Communication Technologies and Society from the University “La Sapienza” of Rome, directed by Mario Morcellini and edited by Fausto Lupetti Editore, deals with subjectivism from different points of view, gathering several contributions from various experts.
The volume is divided into three large sections: the first one offers a general sociological overview (but not only) on individuality in modern times; the second focuses on female subjectivism (in terms of literature, work and cultural consumption); the third one analyzes the relationship between the individual and the environment.
From the female dimension to the territory, from the consumption to the web, from the metropolis to public space: whatever the area where the individual “measures” his own identity is, this latter seems to be often mediated, flaunted, virtual, ever-changing and increasingly uncertain.
The analysis defines the individual in modern society as an “individual in crisis”. The lack of strong models and the constant search for something other than what there is makes him weaker in his relationships with others. By determining his own individuality on the base of these relationships, he turns the concept of “individual in crisis” into an “individual crisis”.
