Mediterranean identities in Brussels with Blumm Prize Future Frames

Laetitia Vançon wins the first edition of BlummPrize Future Frames, photography award on the theme of belonging in the Mediterranean, former cradle of great civilizations, now privileged land for the experimentation of new languages

«The Mediterranean has been the greatest world civilization lab for thousands of years. That is why we asked young artists to explore its legacy and its present, in order to understand – before others – where civilizations, cultures, trust relationships between Institutions and citizens are headed, being so crucial for the future of this area»: with these words Franco Pomilio, creator and promoter of Blumm Prize Future Frames Comparing identities, recalled the ambitious goals of the international photography prize during the award ceremony in Brussels.

The event, which took place at the Embassy of Italy in Belgium (with the partnership, among others, of Reporters Sans FrontieresEuro Mediterranean NetworkRubbettino Editore and ICO), awarded the work "My home, my prison" by French photographer Laetitia Vançon.

According to the members of the jury and curator Stefano Schirato, the work has been awarded because «it deeply investigates the phenomenon of feuds between clans in Albania, ruled by a centuries-old code of laws which includes the right to kill in revenge for a previous murder. The only way to escape this revenge is to remain at home, a place considered inviolable by the Kanun code. With very well realized and delicate images, the reportage is enriched by written contents and personal stories and has a high impact title».

Besides Franco Pomilio, the event was also attended by the Italian Ambassador in Belgium Alfredo Bastianelli and the members of the scientific committee, such as photojournalist Chris Warde-Jones, working also for the New York Times and the Times, Domenico Affinito, editor and correspondent of RCS Group for digital content and vice-president in Italy of Reporters Without Borders, Chiara Spat, photo editor for Grazia magazine and member of GRIN – National Iconographic Editors Group.

Design is a thought activity: we should not replace it with a mere “optimizing” approach, because it’s from imperfections that talent emerges.
